All-Alaska Sweepstakes Centennial Run Completed

The 100th anniversary of the first running of the All-Alaska Sweepstakes dogsled race, 408 miles from Nome to Candle and return, was completed yesterday with the arrival in Nome of the last dog driver of a field of fourteen. Jeff Darling, a Nome resident, was awarded the Red Lantern for last to finish, with an overall time of 169 hours, 56 minutes, 11 seconds. Winner of the race was Mitch Seavey of Sterling, Alaska, with a time of 61 hours, 29 minutes, 45 seconds. The win garnered Seavey the total winner-take-all purse of $100,000. Runner-up was Jeff King of Denali Park, Alaska, with a time of 61 hours, 39 minutes, 5 seconds. Previously the trail record was held by John "Iron Man" Johnson who won the race in 1910 with a time of 74 hours, 14 minutes, 17 seconds.
